UNDERSTANDING THIS CONCERN
What Causes Acne?
Acne happens when pores become blocked with oil and dead skin cells, allowing acne-causing bacteria to multiply and trigger inflammation. Hormones, genetics, stress and skincare habits all influence how often and how severely you break out. It's the most common skin condition in Australia, and far from being just a teenage problem: adult acne, particularly in women in their 20s to 40s, is one of the most frequent concerns we see at the clinic.
Types of Acne, and Why They Matter
Acne ranges from blackheads and whiteheads (clogged pores without inflammation) through to red, inflamed pimples, and at the severe end, deep cystic and nodular acne. The type and severity determine the right care. Mild to moderate inflammatory acne responds well to in-clinic treatments like light therapy and clinical peels. Deep cystic or hormonal acne usually needs medical management, and we'll tell you honestly when your GP or a dermatologist should be part of your plan.
How Light-Based Acne Treatment Works
Specific wavelengths of light target the drivers of breakouts directly. Our IPL Active Acne Treatment uses dual-wavelength light to destroy acne-causing bacteria and calm inflammation, while LED light therapy soothes active breakouts and supports skin healing between treatments, with no downtime. Clinical peels and tailored facials round out the toolkit by keeping pores clear and reducing congestion. The right combination depends on your skin, which is what your consultation establishes.
Adult Acne and Back Acne
Adult breakouts often behave differently to teenage acne: they tend to sit around the jaw and chin, flare with hormonal cycles and stress, and need a gentler approach on skin that's also starting to think about ageing. We also treat back acne with a dedicated clinical treatment, as body breakouts respond well to professional care that's hard to replicate at home.
Acne Scars and Marks Left Behind
If your concern is the marks acne left behind rather than active breakouts, that's its own treatment path: raised or pitted scarring is covered in our acne scar treatment guide, and flat dark marks (post-inflammatory pigmentation) in our pigmentation guide. Not sure if it's acne or rosacea? They're often confused, and the treatments differ.
