UNDERSTANDING THIS CONCERN
What Causes Pigmentation?
Pigmentation occurs when melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, is overproduced in certain areas. The most common triggers are UV exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation and natural ageing. In Australia's high-UV environment, some degree of pigmentation is almost universal by mid-life. But not all pigmentation is the same, and the differences matter.
The Three Types of Pigmentation
Sun spots and age spots (including freckles) are localised clusters of melanin from cumulative UV exposure. They appear as flat, brown marks on the face, hands and décolleté. Melasma is different: larger, symmetrical patches driven by hormones as well as sun, most often across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Because it behaves differently, melasma needs a different approach, and we cover it in our dedicated melasma guide. Post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) is the dark marks left behind after acne, injury or irritation, more common in medium and deeper skin tones.
Why the Type Determines the Treatment
This is the single most important thing to understand about pigmentation: the wrong treatment can make it worse. Heat-based treatments that work brilliantly on sun spots can aggravate melasma. Aggressive resurfacing on inflamed skin can trigger more PIH. That's why we never recommend a treatment before identifying the type. Sun-related spots typically respond to light-based treatments, hormone-driven pigmentation is approached with peel-based care, and post-inflammatory marks often benefit from gentle resurfacing over a course.
How Treatment Works at Amirova
Every pigmentation journey starts the same way: a nurse-led skin assessment to identify what type of pigmentation you have, how deep it sits, and what's driving it. From there we build a plan suited to your skin, which may draw on IPL, clinical peels, skin resurfacing or supporting skincare, alone or in combination. Book a consultation and we'll take it from there.
