UNDERSTANDING THIS CONCERN
Understanding Melasma
Melasma appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, most often across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Unlike sun spots, it isn't caused by UV alone. Hormones play a central role, which is why it's common during pregnancy (often called the "mask of pregnancy"), with hormonal contraception, and in women between their 20s and 50s. It's also more common in medium and deeper skin tones.
Why Melasma Is Different
Melasma pigment sits at mixed depths in the skin, and its hormonal driver means it can flare and return even after successful treatment. Most importantly, melasma is heat-sensitive. Aggressive laser and light-based treatments that clear sun spots can stimulate the pigment cells further and make melasma darker. This is the most common mistake in melasma care, and the reason a correct diagnosis matters before any treatment begins.
How We Approach Melasma
We take a deliberately gentle, heat-cautious path: pigment-targeting clinical peels over a course, paired with strict daily sun protection, the non-negotiable foundation of any melasma plan. Supporting medical-grade skincare helps maintain results between treatments, and for some clients, prescription creams through your GP can complement in-clinic care. Every plan starts with a nurse-led assessment to confirm your pigmentation is melasma and map the right course for your skin.
Managing Expectations
Honesty matters here: melasma is managed, not cured. With the right approach most clients see meaningful, visible improvement over a course of treatment, but ongoing maintenance and sun discipline are what keep it that way. Triggers to watch are sun exposure, heat, and hormonal changes.
